This offensive should not be confused with the Soviet-Japanese Border Wars, (particularly the Battle of Khalkhin Gol/Nomonhan Incident of May--September 1939), that ended in Japan's defeat in 1939, and led to the Soviet--Japanese Neutrality Pact. The Soviet--Japanese Border Wars were a series of border conflicts between the Soviet Union and Japan between 1938 and 1939. After the occupation of Manchukuo and Korea, Japan turned its military interests to Soviet territories. Conflicts between the Japanese and the Soviets frequently happened on the border of Manchuria. The Soviet-Japanese Border Wars served as a prelude to the upcoming World War II conflict in the same sense as the Spanish Civil War (and a number of other conflicts) did, as it essentially pitted the subsequent Allies and Axis Powers against each other. As a result of the Japanese defeat at Khalkhin Gol, Japan and the Soviet Union signed on April 13, 1941 a Neutrality Pact, similar to the German--Soviet non-aggression pact. At the meetings in Tehran (1943), Yalta (1945) and Potsdam (1945), the three major wartime powers, the United Kingdom, United States, and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics agreed on the format of punishment for those responsible for war crimes during World War II. France was also awarded a place on the tribunal. The legal basis for the trial was established by the London Charter, issued on August 8, 1945, which restricted the trial to "punishment of the major war criminals of the European Axis countries." Some 200 German war crimes defendants were tried at Nuremberg, and 1600 others were tried under the traditional channels of military justice. The legal basis for the jurisdiction of the court was that defined by the Instrument of Surrender of Germany. Political authority for Germany had been transferred to the Allied Control Council which, having sovereign power over Germany, could choose to punish violations of international law and the laws of war. Because the court was limited to violations of the laws of war, it did not have jurisdiction over crimes that took place before the outbreak of war on September 3, 1939. One such victimized group of countries was the Baltic States who endured as colonies of the Soviet Union until they gained their freedom in 1991. Michael travels from Tallinn in the North, through Latvia, to Lithuania in the South, sailing out into the Baltic from the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad, formerly East Prussia. Michael was last in Estonia during his filming of Pole to Pole in 1991, when it was still part of the Soviet Empire. On his return, he is struck at how Tallinn has changed, with its hi-rise wi-fi city-centre. The people have changed as well. Freed from the stifling conformity of communism, they can experiment with new living and life-styles. Soon after his arrival he is at the pyramid home of Margus Aru and wife Evelyn and an evening of ordeal by fire. Not that all trace of the Russian influence is gone. Many of the clinics have remained and, feeling in need of a therapeutic pick-me-up, Michael makes an appointment at Lyudmilla Agayeva's hirudotherapy (leech) treatment centre.
